Currently, ManTech is seeking a motivated, career and customer-oriented Senior Wildlife Biologist to join our team in Lompoc, CA.
Job Summary:
The ManTech Natural Resources Lompoc Team is seeking a senior biologist for an immediate, full-time position to support wildlife monitoring programs at Vandenberg Space Force Base, California. This position will be based at our Lompoc, CA office, though we may consider a hybrid position (ability to work from home when appropriate) for the right candidate; however, the candidate will need to live in or near Lompoc. The position will require travel throughout Santa Barbara County and may require travel throughout the southwest region. Work vehicles are provided for travel to work sites. It is expected that the successful applicant will work 60% office and 40% field depending on the season.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Responsible for leading fieldwork both independently and in a team environment, analyzing data, and generating comprehensive reports related to wildlife population monitoring
Assist other project managers in general analysis and report writing for a variety of projects across a range of plant and animal species
Participate in field work which will include routine night spotlight surveys for herpetofauna, daytime seine surveys, placing and maintaining audio recorders, performing habitat assessments and mapping, and mark/recapture techniques
Minimum Qualifications:
B.S. in Ecology, Wildlife biology, Environmental Science, or related field
10+ years of professional wildlife biology experience in academia, government, and/or consulting
Experience leading field biology projects including coordinating/mentoring junior staff, conducting biological surveys/assessments, and ensuring documents are prepared and delivered to clients on time
Specialized work or research experience focused in wildlife biology
Demonstrated proficiency in statistical analysis software and data interpretation techniques
Experience with managing projects from scoping, leadership/mentoring of junior staff, implementation, staff/budget/schedule management, and project close out requirements
Clear and demonstrated understanding of federal and state regulatory requirements
Ability to travel
Preferred Qualifications:
Experience with natural resource management or environmental compliance and permitting for the Department of Defense
Master’s degree in ecology, wildlife biology, environmental science, or related
Research experience with amphibians and/or reptiles
Ability to identify key characteristics of CA plant species and use dichotomous keys
GIS experience (e.g., spatial analysis and producing figures for reports)
Possession of 10(a)(1)(A) recovery permit and California Scientific Collecting Permit with authorization for handling California red-legged frog and southwestern pond turtle, or the qualifications that would enable approval from the US Fish and Wildlife Service and CDFW to do so
Physical Requirements:
Must be comfortable working outdoors and may be exposed to typical field hazards such as poison oak, ticks, and other nuisance species
Office work entails stationary sitting positions up to 50% of the time
Operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine and computer printer
Must be able to move weight occasionally up to 50 lbs at a time
Must be able to traverse outdoors in rugged, uneven terrain sometimes at night
Must be able to operate 4WD and other all terrain vehicles occasionally trailering heavy loads
