Description & Requirements

Currently, ManTech is seeking a motivated, career and customer-oriented Marine Mammal Monitor to join our team in the Lompoc, CA area. The Marine Mammal Monitor will spend 60% of time in the field (Jan-July) and 40% of time spent in the office (Aug-Dec). Field hours will be scheduled around rocket launches to monitor mainland and potentially Northern Channel Islands pinniped colonies. Some monitoring may occur at night with thermal vision and night vision equipment. Overnight travel may be required to the Northern Channel Islands.

Job Summary:

In this position you will perform pinniped monitoring for space launches from Vandenberg Space Force Base. The marine mammal monitor will work under the direction of our Projects Director and Deputy Program Manager and collaboratively with our team of biologists to ensure monitoring protocols and data collection procedures are performed effectively.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Perform pinniped monitoring for launch programs out of Vandenberg Space Force Base

  • Follow data collection protocols outlined in permit documents (permits and training will be provided after hire)

  • Travel in 4WD vehicle on dirt roads to mainland monitoring locations

  • Travel in helicopter or small airplane to and from the Northern Channel Islands monitoring locations.

  • Identify California pinniped species and age classes

  • Prepare simple reports summarizing monitoring efforts and outcomes.

  • Input data into established databases, perform data summaries.

  • Co-manage (under supervision) logistics of trip preparation, procurement of supplies, travel, and on-island logistics associated with working on the northern Channel Islands

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology, Ecology, or related Natural Resources field required

  • 5+ years’ experience with marine mammal identification

  • Ability to identify pinniped species and age classes occurring in California waters

  • Must have previous marine mammal monitoring experience

  • Must have technical field skills and knowledge of scientific principles

  • Demonstrated knowledge of applicable federal environmental regulations including Marine Mammal Protection Act and Endangered Species Act

  • Ability to work in remote locations that require up to two weeks of camping with minimal resources available

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Marine Biology or, related Ecology-type field

Physical Requirements:

  • Must be comfortable working outdoors and may be exposed to typical field hazards such as poison oak, ticks, and other nuisance species

  • Office work entails stationary sitting positions up to 50% of the time

  • Operates a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a calculator, copy machine and computer printer

  • Must be able to move weight occasionally up to 50 lbs at a time

  • Must be able to traverse outdoors in rugged, uneven terrain sometimes at night

  • Must be able to operate 4WD and other all terrain vehicles occasionally trailering heavy loads


The projected compensation range for this position is $67,700.00-$112,100.00.
